Calcium after your Gastric Bypass

After your weight loss surgery, you will also absorb less calcium, and your body truly cannot do without it! Calcium is an essential nutrient that helps maintain strong bones and teeth and contributes to the normal functioning of your muscles. Elan has developed Calcium Vital tablets and Calcium Chew chewable tablets specifically for individuals who have undergone weight loss surgery to help meet your daily calcium needs. The required amount of calcium depends on your surgery. Based on the internationally recognized guidelines from scientific associations (ASMBS and IFSO), we recommend taking at least 1,200 – 1,500 mg per day. It’s also important to take no more than 500 mg of calcium at a time, to allow your body the opportunity and time to absorb the calcium. Important

Calcium is not included in Elan’s Compass products because calcium inhibits iron absorption. There should be at least 2 hours between taking Elan’s Compass and calcium products to give your body sufficient time to absorb the iron properly.
